Muscovy Duck

IMG_4969[1].JPG

The muscovy duck is a fantastic multi-purpose breed to have on any farmstead! They lay large white eggs during the summer months, usually hiding themselves away to brood and incubate. Our flock produces enough eggs that we can let the mommas incubate about half, while we collect the other half for the table or indoor incubation. Also as with most farm raised livestock, we will select a few drakes for the table, which helps keep the flock numbers in check, or offer breeding groups to the public.

These ducks are actually more closely related to the goose then the duck. Also know as the Quack-less duck, Perching duck, and African clawed duck, they of course originate from Africa, and are extremely hardy birds, often found perched in trees or atop roofs and fence lines, and vocalize through a combination whistles, clucks and purrs! They thrive off insect browsing and grazing, just like the goose, but won't turn down the opportunity of grains, which is a must over the winter months.
