2016

My original quad flock - Joey, Autumn, Alyssa and Angie

We still have Joey, Autumn and Alyssa in our flock today, however a great horned owl took Angie from us that winter.

Pilgrim Geese are a medium weight goose breed, mature birds weighing 14-16 pounds. They're a great watch dogs and prefer to graze on grass and weeds, but will need grains during the winter months when grasses are dormant.

It had been a goal of mine since 2010 to own this unique breed, and my dreams came true in 2016 when I was finally able to purchase a quad of goslings from a hatchery. The Pilgrim Goose is an auto-sexing breed, which means goslings hatch out in a two-tone down, and with some experience, you could soon decipher a goose from a gander at hatch! No vent sexing needed and the number one reason I had to have this breed! Even as adults you can tell the ganders from the geese by their adult plumage. Adult ganders are most often confused with an Embden as their plumage becomes a solid white, blue eyes and although some grey wings tips happen, its not favored. The adult geese will be quite opposite, sporting more of the toulouse goose plumage, only the goose's face should develop a white mask as she ages.

Mini Acres Ranch currently has a breeding flock of 10 geese! (4 ganders and 6 geese) They are allowed to free-range year round and have access to the barn as shelter if they feel to bunk up. We do allow the geese to self-incubate their eggs as the goose eggs don't fit in our incubators very well. And well, geese are fierce protectors of their nest and goslings! We hope to offer goslings the summer of 2020!
